Today, Daystar is a lifeline for area parents. Daystar families are faced with the challenges of planning and seeking medical and community resources in a system that is not always easy to navigate, in addition to experiencing the numerous personal and family stresses caused by the constant needs of a sick baby. For those parents who remain on the Daystar waitlist and do not qualify for in-home nursing, the alternatives are few. Often times a family member will provide care so that the parent can continue their employment. A parent may quit their job – and lose their health insurance benefits – to care for their child. Too often parents are left with no other feasible option in terms of affordable, safe, appropriate daycare considering their child’s individual needs.
