Parent Support & Family Advocacy

One of the most critical ways Daystar is committed to helping support the health and well-being of medically fragile infants is through our innovative Parent Support & Family Advocacy Program.  A child’s poor health can impact a family in many unpredictable ways.  National research in addition to Daystar’s direct experience has shown many possible stressors involved in raising a medically fragile infant.  A parent’s decreased ability to work and increased number of out-of-pocket medical expenses incurred with the child’s care introduce numerous financial stresses.   Daystar families are also faced with the challenges of planning and seeking medical and community resources in a system that is not always easy to navigate, in addition to experiencing the numerous personal and family stresses caused by the constant needs of a sick baby.

The Daystar Parent Support & Family Advocacy Program provides a long-term impact on health and quality of life of medically fragile infants and their families through the creation of “community.”   The Daystar Director of Admissions & Family Support conducts a support group, where babysitting is provided, to ensure that every Daystar family can benefit from the healing effects of taking part in a community of peers.

The Daystar Parent Support & Family Advocacy Program accomplishes the following measures:

  • Addresses the vital need to advocate for and support the parents of our Daystar babies so they may themselves remain healthy and make informed decisions regarding the future of their child.
  • Promotes a collaborative process of assessment, planning, facilitation, and advocacy to help meet the whole family’s needs.
  • Initiates communication through a support group facilitated by the Family Case Manager as well as regular, individualized family case management to guide parents to available resources and to promote quality, cost-effective outcomes.
